New Coastal Art Prints: From the Orchard in Maui

Coastal Art Print Collection by Anne-Louise Ewen

From sketch to print

Salt air, rain, a fruiting orchard above the Pacific. Last fall I spent two weeks in Maui — my first visit — with a limited palette of bright acrylics and thick watercolor paper. I would walk the property, picking fruit off the trees, collecting things that caught my eye: a giant seashell, a turquoise bowl.

I'd arrange them on the table of the wide covered porch and sit for hours painting while it rained, the blue horizon stretching out in front of me. Coming from the hot dry desert (Joshua Tree, where I live full time) the sensory shift was profound.

These works came out of that peaceful rejuvenating time. Naive and color-saturated, Matisse-like in composition but spare and contemporary. Coral oranges, a teal fruit bowl, lemons on a blue plate, a gestural seashell outline. Joyful, unselfconscious, casual and confident. May they bring bright, grounded serenity to wherever they land.

Many of these sketches are now available as prints in my coastal collection
